During the year-long transition period that followed Brexit, customs borders did not exist between EU states and the UK. This meant that it was as easy to ship cargo from one part of the UK to another, as it was to export/import goods between EU countries like Sweden and the UK.
Shipping Arrangements Post-Brexit
However, from January 1st, 2021, an agreement governing trade and co-operation signed by the European Commission and UK government came into effect. This agreement states that the UK is no longer classed as an EU country for customs purposes. Instead, UK/EU trade is governed by the Union Customs Code. As a result of this, certain formalities have to be observed - like customs declaration submissions for exports and imports. Also relevant in this regard is the Withdrawal Agreement, which details provisions concerning transport practices that began before, but finished after, the transition period ended on December 31st, 2020.
Pre-Clearance & The Union Customs Code
In future, pre-clearance is required for shipments from the UK to Sweden (and other EU countries), and these shipments are subject to the rules of origin. Therefore, every commercial invoice must carry a suitable origin declaration in the correct format. These measures make the shipping process more costly and time consuming. EU officials actively check for third-country products and components, so you should consult a good logistics provider and do some advance planning.
When all the required paperwork is completed, shipping goods to Sweden can be done quickly, just like it could be before Brexit happened. Extra customs inspections sometimes delay the shipping process to a certain extent. Also, additional time for port clearances might be needed, if processes are not followed correctly. Notwithstanding, logistics are usually the main factor that determine how long your shipment takes. During busy shipping periods, you will have to wait slightly longer than during quieter periods of the year.
